A Valley Softened by Moss
The Moss Valley Path drops away from the main network into a narrow, sheltered fold of land where sunlight rarely reaches directly. Here the oaks grow slower and lean at odd angles, their exposed roots and fallen limbs blanketed in thick cushions of moss that have had, in places, decades to spread undisturbed.
Sound behaves differently in the valley. Footsteps soften, voices carry less far, and the trickle of a small stream running beside the path becomes the loudest thing in the woods.
TEXTURES UP CLOSE
Bark, Lichen, and Green
Slow down here and the forest rewards close attention: pale rosettes of lichen spreading across furrowed oak bark, moss in a dozen different greens climbing the same trunk, tiny mushrooms emerging from decaying wood after rain.
樫の樹皮に広がる淡い地衣類、幾種もの緑をまとう苔、雨上がりに現れる小さなきのこ。谷の道では、足を止めてよく見ることが何よりの楽しみです。
SOUND AND STILLNESS
The Stream's Quiet Company
A shallow stream traces the valley floor for much of the walk, never far from the path. It rarely rushes — most of the year it is a soft, continuous murmur over stone — but after rain it rises just enough to remind visitors that the whole valley was, in a slow sense, shaped by water.
谷底には浅い流れが道に沿って続きます。多くの季節は石の上を静かに流れる程度ですが、雨の後にはわずかに水量を増し、この谷が水によって形づくられてきたことを思い出させてくれます。
