A LIVING FOREST
An Ecosystem Beneath the Canopy
The oak forest is more than scenery — it is a slow, layered ecosystem that has supported the same families of deer, foxes, and birds for generations. Acorns feed small mammals through autumn and winter, fallen leaves nurture insects and fungi, and the quiet, continuous canopy gives shy animals the cover they need to live close to people without being seen by them.
樫林は単なる景観ではなく、鹿や狐、野鳥たちが世代を超えて暮らす、静かで重層的な生態系です。木々の恵みが小さな生き物たちを養い、深い木陰が控えめな生き物たちの居場所を守っています。
鹿 · SHIKA
Deer
Small groups of deer move through the lower woodland with an unhurried, almost deliberate calm, grazing on grass and fallen acorns before settling to rest in patches of shade. They are among the least skittish of the forest's residents, but they still prefer distance and quiet over attention.
鹿は小さな群れで林床をゆっくりと移動し、草や落ちた樫の実を食べながら、木陰でしばし休みます。森の生き物の中では比較的おだやかですが、それでも静けさと距離を好みます。
Best time to spot: Early morning and dusk, near the forest edges bordering open grass.
狐 · KITSUNE
Fox
Foxes are the forest's most private residents. They favour the fringes where woodland meets clearing, moving low and fast through long grass, and are far more often heard — a bark in the distance at dusk — than actually seen.
狐は森の中でも最も控えめな住人です。森と草地が接する縁を好み、草の中を低く素早く動きます。夕暮れに遠くで鳴く声を耳にすることの方が、実際に姿を見ることよりも多いでしょう。
Best time to spot: Dusk, at the clearings where forest and open ground meet.
野鳥 · YACHO
Wild Birds
The oak canopy hosts a changing cast of songbirds through the year — bright, busy visitors in spring, deeper and more resonant calls in autumn. Even without seeing a single bird, a walk through the forest is rarely silent.
樫の樹冠には、季節ごとに異なる野鳥たちが訪れます。春には賑やかなさえずり、秋には深く響く声。姿が見えなくても、森を歩くとき、静寂だけということはほとんどありません。
Best time to spot: Mid-morning, listening near the denser stands of mature oak.

Wildlife Viewing Etiquette
- ·Observe quietly and from a distance — sudden movement or noise sends animals into hiding for the rest of the day.
- ·Never feed or attempt to approach wild animals, for their wellbeing as much as your own.
- ·Stay on the marked trails; wandering off-path disturbs nesting and resting areas unseen from the ground.
- ·Avoid flash photography, especially near known nesting sites in spring and early summer.
